SPTA was founded in 1993 to promote interest in the technology, history, crafts and shooting skills of worldwide traditional archery.
This site is intended to give an introduction to traditional archery. We hope it will be a gateway to a colourful and fascinating subject which has everything- craft, culture and history as well as shooting skills.
Our AIMS: are to share knowledge of this limitless subject, from the Avar bow to the 'Zhu' of the Bhutanese. It is hoped that this site will not only provide an introduction to traditional archery, but also become a portal for a great deal of information on worldwide archery traditions.
Our MEMBERSHIP: is open to those who love traditional archery in all its forms, and who practice it in whatever capacity -we have many gifted craftspeople, scholars and historians among our members. SPTA is not about winning -it is about archery.
Not only is there a whole world of archery to enjoy, there is a great deal more to the bow and arrow than high scores or arrow speed!
The two Golden Rules of SPTA are:
1. Be safe.
2. Have fun.
A smile and a traditional bow belong together!
