Society for the Promotion of Traditional Archery

Originally most European archery pioneers in the US shot in the English longbow(Refer the Thompson brothers book "Witchery of Archery"), but a bow gradually emerged which was influenced by native bows, resulting in the shorter bows with thinner, wider limb section known as the American Flat Bowin the UK. To improve the shooting characteristics, arrow shelves were incorporated, narrowing the handle and improving the 'paradox' for a more forgiving shot.

Flatbows without shelves or laminations are shot in the 'primitive' class at SPTA events.
